Quinta das Abelhas Blog

News from the Quinta today:

The builders were supposed to start work last week and still no sign of them, so Andy will phone them today. We haven’t been too bothered about the no-show as we’ve both been ill and don’t relish the disruption, noise and dirt that’s going to be created once they start work. Really do need to get on with it before the rain comes though.

I’m gradually starting an offensive on the couch grass that has overtaken the yet-to-be cultivated portion of my garden terrace. It’s almost impossible to eradicate and there’s SO much of it. However, it apparently is rich in nutrients and makes very good compost, so I’m making a big heap of it (well away from my garden) which I plan to cover in black plastic for a couple of years until I’m sure it’s totally dead and composted, then I should hopefully have some great compost.

I’m also gradually clearing away the summer veg that’s come to an end to make way for planting winter veg. Having to make a heap of tomato plants to burn once the fire ban is lifted, suffered from terrible blight this year due to the unheard-of rain in august. Poor plants, all the leaves have withered and died and there are just some still-ripening tomatoes on them, they look terrible. As soon as it’s a favourable day (biodynamically speaking) I’ll make green tomato chutney and clear up the last of the plants.

Stumble it!
