compost loo

Amazing, the compost loo is now being used, but is still waiting for the shower fittings, and some tiles to be laid around the shower area.

The plan is to make the inside just like any ‘normal’ loo.

While the shower and sink will have hot water heated by the sun (coil of black pipe on the roof).

This is truly a loo with a view:

And in 1 to 2 years we should be able to open one of these shutters, and use the fine compost in our gardens:

This is pretty amazing! Did you order parts, labor, plans online? How common is this in Portugal. Do you know others there who have done this, are doing this? Is this at your new place or the one that you were looking for a buyer for some time back? I want to post about this at my site, “Go to Portugal”. This is really exciting to me. Carry on. All the best, Nia.

hi, we vaguely used a design from the book ‘Lifting the Lid’, and had local builders construct it for us, with a lot of wwoofer help. Its at the quinta we are trying to sell. If our plans work out we’ll be building another one, but this time using straw bale construction. I know of a few farms in central portugal with compost toilets - but none as grand as this one! Feel free to publicise….
