Yay! Finally bought a bucket to fit the old chest I wanted to turn into a Loveable Loo – and today Jonny put it all together for me
Ready to use!
Removable bucket (with lid, not shown in pic) for easy emptying.
Quinta das Abelhas, Permaculture in Central Portugal
Delighted to see you’ve joined the loveable-loo-in-old-chest club! They make such a class toilet!
The chest has been in the bathroom for over a year – now it finally has a bucket inside and a seat on top! Our chest doesn’t have such a distinguished pedigree as yours tho …
Looks awesome! How does it work though? Do you empty the bucket every day? Where do you put the contents? And how does it stay odor-free?
Yes it is awesome!
You put a cupful of sawdust (we also use wood ash) to cover the contents after each use to keep it odour-free. It takes about a week for one person to fill the bucket. You then empty it onto the compost heap and cover with some straw (or grass, or weeds).

Thanks for the explanation and the link! I’ll definitely build a lovable loo too in the future…

It’s the best loo song I know!
