Quinta das Abelhas offers you a warm family welcome on a beautiful organic smallholding in the green heart of Portugal, with breath-taking views of two mountain ranges, the Serra da Estrela (highest in Portugal) and the Serra de Açor.There is plenty to do on the quinta, there are ducks, geese, chickens, dogs, cats, and horses to play with and you are welcome to join in with all farm activities such as wine-making, olive harvesting (in season), helping in the gardens and feeding the animals, etc. Enjoy lovely walks through the valley and forests: the River Mondego for swimming and fishing, and the village with shops, bars and a restaurant, are just 15 mins walk.
You can visit the local markets at Tábua (Sunday morning) and Arganil (Thursday morning); one of the many places of interest in the area such as Coimbra, a historic university city; Piodão, a traditional mountain village; one of the nearby river beaches; go to the beach at Figueira da Foz; skiing in the Serra da Estrela; or simply stay on the quinta and relax, listening to the gentle sound of the sheep bells as the shepherd passes through to graze his herd.
The facilities at the quinta are basic: there is a solar shower on the camping terraces, a composting toilet (loo with a view!), and water for drinking, cooking and washing comes from the well. For cooling off on hot days, we have a small irrigation tank to splash around in.
You can pitch your tent under the shade of an olive tree on one of our secluded terraces sheltered by grape vines. Alternatively, you may rent our 5m Mongolian Yurt with a double bed and two single “sofa beds”. At some times it is also possible to rent a 3-berth caravan (double & single bed).
You have the use of our little “kitchen caravan” situated on the terrace below the yurt which has all the facilities you need for making light meals and refreshments. Donations for the use of gas are requested.
Alternatively you are welcome to join the family for evening meals, produced as much as possible from organic produce fresh from the gardens and accompanied with our home-produced organic wine. Special diets are no problem (please let us know in advance) and vegetarian/vegan cooking is a speciality. Picnic lunches can be provided.
WWOOFING: Quinta das Abelhas is a member of WWOOF Portugal and offers volunteer work placements on the smallholding in return for free camping and meals, please see the wwoof & volunteer work page for more details.
GEOCACHING: Quinta das Abelhas is an ideal base for geocachers and there are many caches in the area (search www.geocaching.com for caches in Coimbra and also Viseu state/province to find those closest to Quinta das Abelhas or email us for advice on locations). One of the caches is close enough to ride to and, if you are an experienced rider, we can guide you on horseback to the cache location (of course we leave the fun of finding the cache to you though!). This is a 4-5 hour round-trip (plus 30 mins – 1hr for picnic lunch) and we will take a picnic lunch to give ourselves and the horses some rest and refreshment, the cost of a guided outing on horseback, including a picnic lunch, to Palheiros dos Fiais is 75 euros.
HORSE RIDING: Guided trails through beautiful countryside, with an optional picnic lunch (maximum 2 persons).
Prices:
- Camping (own tent): 5 euros per person per night (includes use of kitchen caravan)
- Tent Hire: 5 euros per night
- Yurt: 35 euros per night (2 people) / Extra bed (2 available) 7.50 euros per night (includes use of kitchen caravan)
- For stays of 7 nights of more cleaning and fresh bedlinen is included (once per week).
- Cleaning / Bedlinen for stays of less than 7 nights : 20 euros (2 people) / 25 euros (3 people) / 30 euros (4 people)

Food:
- Evening meal (June – August by arrangement): 8 euros per person (2 courses + wine)
