Quinta das Abelhas offers you a warm family welcome on a beautiful organic smallholding in the green heart of Portugal, with breath-taking views of two mountain ranges, the Serra da Estrela (highest in Portugal) and the Serra de Açor.There is plenty to do on the quinta, there are ducks, geese, chickens, dogs, cats, and horses to play with and you are welcome to join in with all farm activities such as wine-making, olive harvesting (in season), helping in the gardens and feeding the animals, etc. Enjoy lovely walks through the valley and forests: the River Mondego for swimming and fishing, and the village with shops, bars and a restaurant, are just 15 mins walk.
You can visit the local markets at Tábua (Sunday morning) and Arganil (Thursday morning); one of the many places of interest in the area such as Coimbra, a historic university city; Piodão, a traditional mountain village; one of the nearby river beaches; go to the beach at Figueira da Foz; skiing in the Serra da Estrela; or simply stay on the quinta and relax, listening to the gentle sound of the sheep bells as the shepherd passes through to graze his herd.
The facilities at the quinta are basic: there is a solar shower on the camping terraces, a composting toilet (loo with a view!), and water for drinking, cooking and washing comes from the well. For cooling off on hot days, we have a small irrigation tank to splash around in.
Camping: You can pitch your tent (or rent one of ours) under the shade of an olive tree on one of the secluded terraces sheltered by grape vines.
Yurts:
Choose from 3 comfortable and spacious yurts in secluded locations with stunning views.
5m “Mongolian Yurt” with a double bed and two single sofa beds:
4m “Woodland Yurt” with double bed:
3m “Pixie Yurt” with single bed.
Catering: You have use of the kitchen caravan situated on the terrace below the Mongolian Yurt which is equipped with crockery, cutlery, a two-ring gas hob with grill, a hay box cooker, and a cool box. The caravan has a table and seating inside, and there is a large covered wooden dining table and benches outside. There’s even a picnic hamper for you to take with you on days out.
We have fresh seasonal organic fruit and veg, eggs, and a stock of basic foods (rice, pasta, beans, flour, etc) available for purchase.
You are also welcome to join us for evening meals, made mostly from organic produce fresh from the gardens and accompanied with our home-produced organic wine. Special diets are no problem (please let us know in advance) and vegetarian/vegan cooking is a speciality. Picnic lunches can be provided.
wwoofing: Quinta das Abelhas is a member of WWOOF Portugal and offers volunteer work placements on the smallholding in return for free camping and meals, please see the wwoof & volunteer work page for more details.
Geocaching: Quinta das Abelhas is an ideal base for geocachers and there are many caches in the area (search www.geocaching.com for caches in Coimbra and also Viseu state/province to find those closest to Quinta das Abelhas or email us for advice on locations).
Horse Riding: Is possible for one experienced rider. We can arrange to meet non-riders (or swap riders) at a restaurant or picnic lunch along the way.
Prices:
- Camping (own tent): 5 euros per person per night (includes use of kitchen caravan)
- Tent Hire: 2 berth tent: 5 euros per night / 2 bedroom tent 20 euros per night
- Mongolian Yurt: 35 euros per night (2 people) / Extra bed (2 available) 7.50 euros per night
- Woodland Yurt: 25 euros per night (2 people)
- Pixie Yurt: 15 euros per night (1 person)
- For stays of 7 nights of more cleaning and fresh bedlinen is included (once per week).
- Cleaning / Bedlinen for stays of less than 7 nights : 10 euros (1 person) / 20 euros (2 people) / 25 euros (3 people) / 30 euros (4 people)
- Horse Riding: 10 euros per hour.
- Breakfast: 5 euros per person
- Picnic Lunch: 7 euros per person
- Evening Meal (June – August by arrangement): 10 euros per person (2 courses + wine)
- Travel: Pick up from Santa Comba Dão station 10 euros
